Join us as we cross the North Pacific and sail through the heart of what everyone has been talking about, the North Pacific Gyre!
If you’re looking to test your mettle on an ocean crossing that’s a bit more rugged than the milk run out to Hawaii, this is the voyage for you. We’ll encounter a little bit of everything – warm, fast, close reaching in the tradewinds out of Hawaii and the chance for some spectacular mid-ocean swimming under the Pacific High mid-trip. Then we’ll be mixing it up with frontal systems approaching the coast of Canada and maybe even some fog coming down the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Last year we saw everything from 0 to 32 knots of wind and experienced every point of sail.
If you’re more interested in seeing the problem of plastic pollution for yourself, we’ll be go right through the heart of the garbage patch. We’ll conduct educational manta trawls for micro-plastic pollution, as well as document and observe larger debris. If the weather permits, you’ll be able to take home your own sample of mid-ocean plastics from our trawl efforts.

My trip from O’ahu to Victoria aboard Sea Dragon was an incredible experience. I was continually amazed by Eric, Shanley and Meret, and the level of professionalism, knowledge, and courtesy displayed by each throughout the entire journey. I cannot think of a single moment where we were not fully confident in their experience and expertise. They taught us a great deal about sailing and navigation throughout the trip in a manner that was very engaging and a lot of serious fun! Hats off to Pangaea Exploration and the crew of Sea Dragon for being able to provide such an amazing life experience! It was truly the trip of a lifetime!!
Day 1: Arrival on Sea Dragon
You’ll join us at Ko Olina Marina in Oahu between 1500 and 1700 to move on board. You’ll have the opportunity to find your bunk and begin to get settled in before we all gather together for our first dinner on board. After dinner, your professional crew will take you through general life on board and safety procedures. You’ll be fitted with your own lifejacket and if you didn’t bring any with you, assigned foul weather gear. You’ll have the rest of the evening free to just relax or explore around the resort and marina.
Day 2: Hawaiian Island Day Sail
Today you’ll get to know your home for the next few weeks. After breakfast, we’ll head out for a day sail where we’ll practice safety procedures, get familiar with the deck layout and sail Sea Dragon for the first time against The backdrop of the lush volcanic islands of Hawaii. We’ll be back on the dock in the afternoon and have some free time to go for a swim or just enjoy the area.
Day 3: Departure for Big Blue
After breakfast, we’ll clear out of US customs and immigration, cast off the lines and head out to sea. We’ll set the sails just as we did the day before, only this time we’ll be on our way to Canada. We’ll fall into our watch schedule and have our first night under the stars at sea.
Day 4 – 20: Offshore Sailing
We will all find our rhythm to life at sea and the days will fade in and out upon big blue. No two days, sunrises, sunsets or watches will be the same. Hopefully we’ll spot some good sea life, including dolphins, whales, albatross and boobies. As we adjust our sails along the way, things that seemed so foreign in the beginning will quickly become second nature, and the miles will fall behind as we continue north.
Day 21: Estimated Arrival in Victoria
After more than two weeks at sea, we’ll arrive at Victoria Harbor. The Strait of Juan de Fuca will welcome us from the sea and at once our senses will be re-introduced to attributes of land. We’ll come alongside the dock, and while we wait to get cleared through customs and immigration, we’ll tidy Sea Dragon. After we’re cleared it will be time for a cold beverage, a walk on terra firma and a group dinner on shore to celebrate our arrival.
Day 22: Departure Day
After a fun night out, it will be time to disembark Sea Dragon at 0900. We’ll all say so long, but not goodbye and you’ll find yourself free to explore beautiful Victoria.

You will join the boat in in Ko Olina between 1500-1700 on the first day. You will depart the boat in Victoria at 0900 on the last day. Our actual passage time on this ocean voyage is dependent on the weather. If we have a fast passage, we could arrive as early as July 26, Our slowest voyage time would be arriving the 31st, with guests departing the boat on the 1st as per the itinerary. If we arrive early, you are welcome to stay aboard until the 1st to explore Victoria and Vancouver Island.
Honolulu International Airport (HNL) is about a 30 minute drive from Ko Olina. There are numerous ferries from Victoria to Seattle, Vancouver, and Tsawassen. You can also travel via seaplane to Vancouver or Seattle, or fly Air Canada out of Victoria International Airport (YYJ), which is about a 20 minute drive north of the city.
All crew members will require a passport and visas from their home country that will allow them to travel to/ from the USA and Canada. Please note that if you are not a US or Canadian citizen, you will likely need to complete a Canadian ETA prior to traveling. Please ensure you have the appropriate paperwork completed before joining the vessel, or you will not be allowed to board. ERIC LOSS & SHANLEY MCENTEE – SKIPPER & FIRST MATE
Eric Loss and Shanley McEntee have been with Pangaea Exploration since 2012. They have extensive experience working with scientific and non-profit research groups and enjoy running educational adventures for school groups. Eric and Shanley have taken Sea Dragon through the Panama Canal, up the St. Lawrence Seaway to Chicago, and to the Baltic, the Caribbean, West Africa, Central America, and the Central Pacific.
Shanley, born in 1987, grew up surfing and swimming in the Pacific in Del Mar, California. Throughout her youth, she worked with the Surfrider Foundation to protect California’s coastlines. She has a BA in Environmental Policy and Marine Science from Western Washington University. Her love and curiosity for the sea also extends underwater, where she is a PADI Rescue Diver.
After college she learned to sail, combining her passion for science, the environment, and the sea by spending several months aboard Sea|Mester’s schooners Ocean Star and Argo. Soon after she earned her Ocean Yachtmaster license. Shanley is the medical officer onboard Sea Dragon while on expedition and, alongside Eric, runs and maintains her both on and off program.
Eric, born in 1985, grew up in Laguna Beach, California. During his youth, he sailed dinghies, raced CFJ’s, Larks, and C420’s, and taught sailing to children in Dana Point, California. As a member of the Sea Scouts, Eric gained experience sailing and repairing cruising sailboats, 80’ to 130’ schooners, ketches, and brigs, locally and on several ocean crossings. He also earned the Sea Scout Quartermaster Award.
After graduating from Bowdoin College, Eric became a PADI Divemaster while working for ActionQuest and Sea|Mester, developing his teaching skills as he progressed from running summer programs on 50’ yachts to skippering 88’ and 113’ schooners throughout the Eastern Caribbean and across the Atlantic. In 2011, Eric took a break from professional sailing to buy and refit Odyssey, an Islander 36, to attempt a non-stop solo circumnavigation. Eight months later, he returned to Los Angeles, having sailed past the Great Capes of the Southern Oceans and back up the Pacific to his home port.
When not aboard Sea Dragon, Eric and Shanley have sailed throughout the Caribbean, across the Atlantic, and to the Arctic Circle aboard their own Pouvreau 42 Cutter, Fleur Australe.
MOLLY WHITNEY – DECKHAND
Molly was born in England in 2000, but family work took her to the beautiful west coast of Scotland in 2007 where she found my love for the sea and sailing. It’s always been a part of life; grandad lived on a boat in Sussex and her dad bought a boat which we sailed every summer around the Firth of Clyde.
During her time at Academy, she went on school trips to OYT Scotland, sailing on their Challenge 72’s and Oyster Ketch 70. When she left academy she volunteered with them while she was at college studying sound production but found that she would rather spend time at sea than in a studio, so Mo became OYT Scotland’s full time Cadet of 2017-18, getting her RYA Yachtmaster Offshore commercially endorsed and experience working with youth.
2018-19 took her through RYA Cruising Instructor and to sailing on bigger tall ships in Australia (Young Endeavour) and Sweden (Vega Gamleby.) Most recently she was back in Tasmania traveling and sailing on more ships.
Sailing is Molly’s life, she couldn’t imagine doing anything else.
